Book of the Month Club, August 2012

This months book of the month is NightWhere by Bram Stoker Award-winning author John Everson.

"She yearned to go beyond... but some curtains should never be opened.

When Rae broached the idea of visiting an underground sex club, Mark didn’t blink. He should have. Because NightWhere is not your usual swingers club. Where it’s held on a given night…only those who receive the red invitations know. Soon Rae is indulging in her lust for pain. And Mark is warned by a beautiful stranger to take his wife away before it’s too late.

But it’s already too late. Because Rae hasn’t come home. Now Mark is in a race against time—to find NightWhere again and save his wife from the mysterious Watchers who run the club. To stop her from taking that last step through the degradations of The Red into the ultimate BDSM promise of The Black. More than just their marriage and her life are at stake: Rae is in danger of losing her soul..."

"A master of twisted imagery, Everson doesn’t shy away from graphic gore: Nightwhere is an erotic horrorfest you won’t be able to put down!” - Lucy Taylor, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of
The Safety of Unknown Cities

I'm reading this already and it is hard to put down.

Already purchased, and synchronized on all of my Kindle platforms! I'd been looking forward to this one for a while, so prodding it to the top of the stack (like we did with CARNAGE ROAD) is most welcome.

I'm really excited for people to read this one. It's completely depraved!

It is proving to be an eye opener thus far.

And I thought Ouchy The Clown was scary...Actually he is.

You have to factor in that I am also a coulrophobe.

Anyway here is my review...

NightWhere takes you down a dark path into the heart of depravity and degradation where the rather pitiful addicts of pain and pleasure (those in the novel, I know a few aficionados who are on the whole rather well balanced individuals and lovely friends, but I digress) find themselves invited to what is ostensibly an exclusive swingers fetish club, however behind this facade lies doors to damnation and terror. It is not for the faint of heart as the novel relishes in it’s depiction of the darkest desires imaginable. I enjoyed its relentless pace and unflinching depiction of unbridled sensual excess.

I'm starting chapter 10, and this thing passed DEPRAVED back around chapter 3 (maybe chapter 2.)

Wow!

Oh man, you are in for it. If I remember correctly chapter 10 isn't even the worst (best?) of it.

Another thing I love about NightWhere, and Everson's erotic prose in general, is he always manages to get my loins a' burnin' with scenes I never thought I would find erotic. He has an uncanny ability to bring out hidden sexual desire or curiosities that perhaps you don't know are there. I find that aspect of his writing the most fascinating.

Finished this morning. All I can say is HOLY F*CK. OK, I guess that should be UN-holy F*ck. The book was, what, amazing, erotic, repulsive, intense, deviant, compelling -- I could probably go on. This was one hell of a pick, to be sure!

This was my first novel by the good Mr. Everson. I'd tasted enough of his short fiction that I knew I was in for a wild ride, but I had no idea to what depths he could drag me along with his prose.

I am so glad you were as blown away by this story as I was, Jim. I would love for you to read The 13th or Siren, both of which are neck in neck as my favorite, and I am quite curious to see how you would react having read NightWhere first. The difference between the 2 aforementioned novels and NW is the difference between sneakin' a kiss under the bleachers and diving into homebase with a gigantic strap on and ball gags!

Anyway, I know Everson would love to hear your comments so I will be sure to pass them along.

Thanks for joining in this month

Just picked up a signed copy from John, at Horrorfind (along with Ronald Malfi's new one, THE NARROWS). I don't think I've ever read anything by him. This one sounds like a hell of a read. Can't wait to crack it open.

I am very curious to see what NightWhere readers think of his earlier novels after reading this first. This is the most extreme of anything Everson's done even though all his work kinda leads up to this.

Siren & The 13th are my favorites.

I'm pleased to announce that Nightwhere has been nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Novel.

Looks like we had some great picks, huh gang?

Congratulations to Mr. Everson! Hope he can bring this one home. It would be well deserved
