Episode 78: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Are you familiar with the Klingon proverb that revenge is a dish best served cold? It is very cold in space... The first sequel in the Star Trek film franchise, The Wrath of Khan brought adventure and excitement back along with an old face, Khan (Ricardo Montalbán).

Episode 118: The Rep
Special Guest: Morgan White

The lights are going down on repertory cinemas around the globe thanks to digital projection and the evolution of home cinema. We're talking about Morgan White's documentary, The Rep, which explores independent cinemas via looking at the Toronto Underground.

http://projection-booth.blogspot.ca/...e-118-rep.html

This is a very interesting show, especially for denizens of Toronto familiar with the ill-fated Toronto Underground Cinema and the "800 pound gorilla" that is the Tiff Lightbox.

But even if you're not from around these parts, this show will be of interest to anyone concerned with the fate of repertory cinemas in the digital age.

Right. You've a new fangirl. I had no idea Mink had made a CD. I'm ordering a signed copy of her CD from her site. I just listened to the Sorcerer show. I can't say enough about your interview. I've followed Friedkin for years ( and believed the negative hype from the sources I'd read) and have not come across something so candid. You've developed a great relationship with him as an interviewer. It was incredibly refreshing for one who has never seen his candor in person. I'll start reviewing your site on iTunes, and will link the podcast on my fb account. Fucking social networking. But it does work. Lovely to have met you in August, by the way. I look forward to meeting you again with a much more informed view on the great work you're doing. (I'll probably drop more comments here as I listen to subsequent podcasts). And no, I've never seen Sorcerer. I will now.

Count me in once again. Alex Cox = Merseyside Legend.

For any stray Scousers who just happen to glance at this post (yeah, right!), Alex Cox is doing a Q and A at Fact in Liverpool, England, tomorrow night (November 20th)--a fantastic accompaniment to a preview screening of Parkland.

Details here: http://www.picturehouses.co.uk/cinem...film/Parkland/

Yes, I did; thank you.

p.s. I got back from town a little while ago: Alex Cox is a gentleman; and Parkland is shit.

p.p.s. Mr. Cox was expecting to be interviewed, live on air, by England's 'Channel 4 News' about his book, The President and the Provocateur. He made his way down to the Picturehouse lobby where he met the waiting film crew; and at the very last minute, the disrespectful bastards cancelled on him.

Episode 142: Eating Raoul
Special Guests: Mary Woronov, Dick Blackburn,
Susan Saiger, Jed Fruer

Just in time for Thanksgiving, it's a story of Reagan-era morality and economics gone wild, Eating Raoul put "cult filmmaker" Paul Bartel on the map with a surprise mainstream hit about Paul and Mary Bland, two Puritanical folks who kill swingers for cash to fulfill their "American Dream."

Get ready to dig in as guest co-host: Adam Spiegelman of the Proudly Resents podcast joins us once again to dig into this "Bland Enchilada" paired with Château Lafite Rothschild.

Special Guests: William Friedkin, Joseph McBride, Christopher Welles Feder, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Rosenbaum

An episode two years in the making...

Orson Welles's follow-up to Citizen Kane adapted Booth Tarkington's Pulitzer prize-winning novel about industrial progress and the loss of innocence set against a tumultuous family, the Ambersons.

Welles infamously lost control of The Magnificent Ambersons before its final release. We'll examine its production, its destruction, and attempts to restore what many consider Welles's forgotten masterpiece.

We're joined by guest co-host Roger L. Ryan.

And...there's a special appearance by Mondo Justin!

Episode 144: The Brain that Wouldn't Die
Special Guests: Jon Gillespie, Tom Sivak & Kevin Frei

Is The Brain that Wouldn't Die a schlock classic or a treatise on unfettered male desire? Why not both?

We spoke to not one but three people who have worked on musical adaptations of the film (The Brain that Wouldn't Die: A New Musical, The Brain that Wouldn't Die: In 3-D!, and Head: The Musical).

We're joined by Professor Kevin Heffernan, author of Ghouls, Gimmicks, and Gold: Horror Films and the American Movie Business, 1953–1968.

The paths of podcasts twist and turn through mountains of miscalculations and often lose themselves in error and darkness!

Episode 147: Big Gus, What's the Fuss?
Special Guest: Lloyd Kaufman

Also known as Ha-Balash Ha'Amitz Shvartz (AKA Brave Detective, Schwartz) this early film co-directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Ami Artzi has been described by Kaufman as being "more harmful to the Jews than Mein Kampf." We'll see if that's true or a slight exaggeration on this first episode of 2014.

We're joined again by Yaniv Eidelstein, who gives us the scoop on many of the cast and crew of this mad cap Israeli film.

Episode 148: Zardoz
Special Guest: Brian Hoyle

Ever want to see Sean Connery wearing a red diaper? Then look no further than John Boorman's Zardoz, a political allegory with nods to The Wizard of Oz.

We're joined by our old friend, Josh Johnson, director of Rewind This.

Available via our FREE APP, iTunes, Stitcher, and our website:

Episode 149: Boys in the Sand
Special Guest: Wakefield Poole

Wakefield Poole's Boys in the Sand was one of the first adult films to find mainstream success. By itself, this is remarkable, that the gay porn film came out a mere 18 months after Stonewall and a year before Deep Throat makes it even more so.

Robert St. Mary and I are joined by Jim Tushinski, the director of I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole to talk Boys in the Sand, Bijou, Bible, and much more.

Available via iTunes, Stitcher, Geek Juice, and our website:

Episode 150: Cruising
Special Guests: Don Scardino, Randy Jurgensen, & Travis Mathews

A highly controversial film, William Friedkin's Cruising was as confusing as it was confused. It's a slasher film, of sorts, set in the leather bar scene of the late '70s.

We're joined by Jeffrey Schwarz of I Am Divine, Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon, Vito! and more.

Thanks Deadline and El Goro. And thanks for the kind words about the Cruising episode, El Goro. I'm happy with the way that one came together.

We should do a crossover and get you onto TPB
