DVD Releases: April 3, 2012 and April 10, 2012

Welcome to the first DVD list at our new location. You'll notice we now link straight to a main sale page in most cases, which should give you more information all at once, including price, specs, reviews, etc. I'm also toying with the idea of linking to official sites and trailers. I did that in a few places here, as a sort of trial run. Let me know what you think of this idea and if you want to see more in the future. I'm working on a post covering the rest of April, which should be up in the next few days.

April 3, 2012

The Afflicted (Midnight Releasing) - Official Site and Trailer
Alien Opponent (Shout! Factory) - Trailer
Bloodlust (Lost Empire)
Dark Awakening (Craze) - DVD-R

Hellacious Acres: The Case of John Glass (The Collective) - Official Site
The Midnight Disease (Brain Damage)
Paranormal Proof (?) - Official Site
Pharaoh's Curse (MGM) - DVD-R
The Prophecy Collection: 4 Film Set Blu-ray (Miramax Echo Bridge)
Stag Night of the Dead (Left Films) - Trailer

True Love Zombie (MiniSuperChihuahua)

April 10, 2012

Mafia Kingpin Collection (Pop Flix)
Night Gallery Season 3 (Universal)
Rat Scratch Fever (Media Blasters)
The Terror Experiment (Anchor Bay) - Also in blu-ray.
Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except (Synapse) - Blu-ray/DVD Combo - Official Site
Trippin' (Koch) - Official Site
True Story Of A Woman In Jail: Sex Hell (Impulse)
The Veteran (Inception Media Group)

Note on the Dark Shadows Set - If you look at the first user review on Amazon, it spells this all out, but the gist is that this set is sold out and they are working on a new version for July. On 4/10, they're releasing approx. 30 smaller sets of Dark Shadows material, way too many to list here. Go to Amazon or your favorite retail site and check them out.

Nice to see you back! I was hoping this thread would return.

I've been waiting for Stag Night of the Dead to come out. The link works perfectly. Great job and thanks for all the work you put into the posts.

Looks like one or two gems in a giant pile of DTV crap.

Is STAG NIGHT OF THE DEAD really supposed to be that good? I'd give it a rental if Netflix had it.

Yes, Justin i think i missed your weekly report the most over the last two months. Glad it's back to help me see what's available on the home market.

The BIG question i have on this list is Argento's FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET coming out on a Shameless blu ray disc. I have bought a few excellent Shameless discs in the past from the UK but does the release of this Region Free blu ray mean that we might see Shameless discs getting some distribution over here on this side of the Atlantic ocean?

I see the disc is already listed on Amazon.com...

This will be great news for horror fans if Shameless discs start showing up over here!!

Glad to have you back Mr. Victor. Too bad there's nothing on this list that's a buy for me. S'all good: I still have to watch Corman's World.

Anybody have one of these DVD-R discs? Curious about them.

I've reviewed a few of the MGM Limited Edition Collection for a website. Sound and picture quality has been good on the ones I've seen, but don't expect a transfer with any clean up work. Also, most of them have no special features, not even a trailer.

If you watch films on your computer, the jacket warns that the DVD might not play on PC drives.

While this is a viable option for fans wanting a title that might not generate enough profits for a wide release, the asking price is often about $20, which is about the price of a major blockbuster film during the first week of release. While the price might be right if you really want a copy of a film, I suspect it might limit impulse buys.

To add to Bigmac's info, I've got a dvd-r of Thundarr the Barbarian from Warner Brothers and it's a professional looking package that plays fine so far. Warner and MGM have both released a lot of interesting stuff. I try to include it all on the lists but they are released at irregular times and thus hard to keep track of easily. This Craze company looks like it might be a public domain or bootleg outfit though, so I would approach with caution.

Thanks for the info!

Sounds about okay except for the lack of special features.

I was afraid they were something along the lines of shoddy stuff one can find in ebay.

I don't see why you couldn't have done these lists on Twitter.

Glad to see them back. But nothing is jumping out at me this time around.

My copy of The Green Slime from WB was great. I would have loved some special features, but the chance to own a copy of the film overcame the lack of special features.

If you really want a copy of a movie, it's not a bad way to go. My only problem is the price makes it prohibitive for a blind buy.

Adding to the posts regarding pro-DVD-Rs: I picked up the Troma release of Evil Clutch for $10 at Shock Stock last year. I'm sure it's sourced from a 2" VHS master and I've had no problems with it, i.e. it plays in my DVD, Blu Ray, and PC players. It's a clean transfer (no tape issues), and while not pristine, is otherwise perfectly acceptable.

I was given 2 DVD-Rs from MGM to review recently. Though the films didn't measure up the quality of both the sound and the video image was top notch.
