I hate to say it but the trailer doesn't really get me excited. As much as I love Ridley Scott's early work, I feel like he's been on a downward slide since Gladiator (with the exception of Matchstick Men). The man is responsible for two of my all-time favorite movies plus a handful of others that are just plain fantastic. While intriguing the trailer just didn't get me pumped up. The biggest thing for me was seeing the Space Jockey ship crashing. That was pretty cool.

Ridley Scott keeps saying it's NOT a prequel (at least in the interviews I've seen) but anyone even looking in the general area of the screen during the trailers knows the truth. I mean, facehuggers, space jockeys, the works.

I thought I'd read that Scott copped to the prequel thing. Anyway, there were statements about exploring the Space Jockey, but it's not going to go where the others went. This is far more than a battle against aliens, which have more than had their day as central characters. Seriously looking forward to this. Can't remember the last time I was watching the calendar for a film that was still months away. Possibly Peter Jackson's King Kong.

A lot of deductions can be made from watching the trailers and even viewing stills from this. It’s is a prequel but a far more interesting looking film than all of the sequels and it is definitely one of my most anticipated films this year. |

I can't wait. I saw some of the trailer but I stopped looking because I don't wanna ruin a single frame. I'm sold. Don't need the spoilers. Definitely one of my most anticipated releases this year. |

Can't remember the last time I was so anxious to see a film! I've heard that this will tie directly into Alien and I've also heard that it's a 'parallel universe' type thing. While I'd love to see this tie into the events of Alien in a big way, I'm mostly just hoping for a great sci-fi thriller.

I'm surprised I'm not that excited about this one. It looks great, but something doesn't feel right about it. I'm worried the film is little more than a big package on Christmas day with shiny wrapping paper that contains little more than socks and underwear.

I have a theory that this is actually a REMAKE of Alien, but the studios have gotten wise to our disdain for that trend, so they are marketing it in a very sneaky (dishonest?) way to make it seem like something new. But...like I said...it's just a theory. I can, unfortunately, be quite the cynic about these things sometimes, an attribute that I've been trying to curb. But, anyway, we'll find out for certain this summer what this new film entails.

As much as I'm looking forward to this film, I've avoided all of the viral videos and trailers that keep getting released. I don't want to see half the film before it comes out. I want to be shocked, amazed, and surprised in the theatre.

This sucker is starting to look more like a reboot of Alien than anything original. I know I appear to be the killjoy on the thread, but this just looks like a lot of flashy visuals with no new story to tell. And I really hope I'm wrong about it.

I hope I'm wrong...but I don't think I am. It's sickening how low their opinion is of us consumers these days. And make no mistake, that's what we are...consumers of their rebranded, rehashed products. And Ridley Scott is along for the ride, cashing in. Well, bully for that motherfucker. Ugh.

"Oh dear Lord Jesus, this ain't happening, man... This can't be happening, man! This isn't happening!" I hope you're wrong but a good few of those scenes sure do look familiar. Maybe that just goes with the territory of an ALIEN universe movie. You know, even if it is a remake, ALIEN fans will still flock to see it. "Ba-a-a-a! BA-A-A-A!!" ~ Nut the Sheep |

Same. As far as this being a remake, well I know enough facts about the film to know that the story is quite different. Still, the similarities are certainly there. A group gets a signal from a mysterious source, investigates, horror ensues. That's not just a remake of Alien, it's one of the most common horror themes.

I've been fairly negative...even, I will admit, downright cynical...in regards to this film. But I swear that I am, indeed, VERY curious to check this film out, in the hopes that I am proven blissfully and thrillingly wrong in my misgivings. So I don't want anyone to think that I'm throwing out yet another naysaying argument against Prometheus by posting the link below, an interesting item about some comments Guillermo Del Toro has made saying that Ridley Scott's new film has pretty much squashed any of the already slim chances we had of seeing a GDT-helmed version of Lovecraft's "At The Mountains Of Madness". I just thought I'd share this and get everyone's thoughts: http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news...rometheus-ties

If Prometheus is so close to what Del Torro wanted to do with ATMOM that he's decided to give up on it, then that's cool with me. If the two films really feature the "Same premise. Scenes that would be almost identical." and if it's true that "Both movies seem to share identical set pieces and the exact same BIG REVELATION (twist) at the end." then I'm happy to take the version directed by Riddley Scott over Del Torro.

You can be shitty and flippant to me all you want, but that was someone's pride, sweat, and work they spent years trying to get greenlit only to watch it go down the tubes while Scott's film that likely won't even CREDIT the Lovecraft work gets to jump the gun and squash it once and for all. I don't think it takes much looking through the filmographies to see who's by far the stronger genre enthusiast between the two. That's not saying Scott's bad as I'm just as interested in Prometheus as most everyone, but, at this point in their careers and in 2012 siding with Scott?

In a perfect world, there would be room for both, and audiences would understand that "Mountains" is based on a book that was written over 80 years ago, and that it has been a passion project for Del Toro for some time now. But perhaps Guillermo is correct in gracefully bowing out now. Because I'm afraid he's right. Outside of the Lovecraft faithful and the horror community in general, how many average moviegoers these days (read: tweens-young adults) do you think are familiar enough, or even at all, with the source material to be able to distinguish the fact that the elements in Scott's film are similar to, if not outright straight from, the work of Lovecraft? NONE. And in their ignorance, they would accuse Guillermo's film of being a rip-off of Scott's higher profile film. A similar situation happened in the summer of 1999, when M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense blew up the box office. Less than a month later, David Koepp's Stir Of Echoes was released, a film based on a Richard Matheson book that had been published roughly 40 years prior to Shyamalan's film. Both films featured very similar story elements, and yet Koepp's film was legitimately based on a previous work, making it the more original of the two films, if you will. Did that stop audiences from calling Stir a carbon copy of Sense? Nope. I remember hearing several people at the screening of Echoes that I attended complaining as they walked out that it was just a rip-off of Night's film. And Echoes suffered at the box office because of this misconception, having had the bad luck of opening afterwards. Even though...dare I say it?...it was in many ways the superior film. So I think Guillermo is smart enough to have recognized this unfortunate truth in time to put his "Mountains" to bed once and for all. Sad, but true.

Not being either, just stating my opinion on the topic. It had absolutely nothing to do with you. How was I shitty and flippant towards you? Sucks that Del Torro has given up on his dream project, yes. But that's no concern of mine really. Not a fan of his films, so it doesn't hurt me personally that he won't make this one. Quote:
Seems to me that there is more than enough room for both. Del Torro hasn't even started pre-production on ATMOM (as far as I know. Haven't followed the project though) so it would still be a few years before we get that film even if a studio green lights it today. By that time Prometheus will be in the past and I really don't think people would be screaming in the streets about how Del Torro stole his idea from Scott. And if they are that stupid, who cares? I have to echo what others have said here and elsewhere, seems like a cop out on Del Torros part.

I mean that it's been years upon years since Scott's done anything in horror/fantasy/sci-fi. Guillermo del Toro basically lives it and breathes it in every project. That doesn't mean Scott isn't a good director, but del Toro never has to "return" because he never leaves, and he brings his own unique visual sense, to boot.

I apologize, I haven't felt well lately and that combined with the internet's lack of inflection might have struck me at an intolerant moment. I'll do keep in mind to keep those under better control.

What's better, a film that profits by reinterpreting Lovecraft or one that profits by sticking to the original material? I know which one I think is more deserving of a green light.

In a brand new exclusive interview with EW.com, screenwriter Damon Lindelof talks about getting the Prometheus gig, what excited him about taking it on, and meeting Ridley Scott. But most importantly, he answers the burning question...Is this sucker a prequel to Alien or what?! http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/05/1...fe-after-lost/
