I discovered a not bad tv miniseries on CBC last night. I don't have cable, so the CBC is one of the 2 channels I get. I start watching whatever's on after the 11 pm news, and usually I can't bear more than 5 minutes, but this show held my interest for an hour and wasn't too cringe-worthy.

It's called Grand Ourse (Great Bear), was produced in Quebec in 2003, and is subtitled.

The plot concerns a small northern Quebec town (best accessed by bush plane) called Grand Ourse. There's a band of psychics headed by a spooky gray-haired matriarch. The local kids amuse themselves by sticking their heads in a hollow tree that shows them a murder. The tv signal in the town is jammed late at night with footage of rabbits fucking. Middle-aged Ecstasy dealers sell their wares to uber-cool big city baddies who bring their own stereo to provide a techno soundtrack for the transaction. A washed-up Montreal reporter is sent out there to do a "small town Quebec" piece and apparently has his destiny tied to the spooky matriarch. People get murdered. People see ghosts. ... And this was just one hour.

Grand Ourse is over the top, overwrought, and melodramatic, but it isn't boring and it's actually not lame. I'm not sure if it's good, but it's better than most crap on tv.

It's on Mondays at 11:25 p.m. on CBC. I couldn't find out on the CBC website how long it will run or any further information.
