When in the world is HBO going to put the "Tales from the Crypt"
series on DVD? I mean, the show went on for 7 seasons and was
produced and directed by Hollywood's biggest stars.

Will somebody convince HBO to make some box sets loaded with
extras?

If you have a region free player, check out the "Masters of Horror" DVD series from Germany which collects 32 episodes of the show on eight DVDs. There's also a French DVD with a few episodes, I believe.

But if you only have a R1 player, there's always the "Tales from the Crypt - The Robert Zemeckis Collection" DVD that has three episodes ("And All Through the House", "Yellow" and "You, Murderer").

Sure, it isn't the entire series, but it's a start.

There's also the book, Tales from the Crypt: Comics and the Hit Television Series. It's a giant coffee table book and it's awsome.

that coffee table book is great, and there is another softcover one just about the comics thats good too.
I'd love to get that crypt episode with Morton Downey Jr in the haunted house on disc.

Yeah, I know. I already have the book you talked about. In fact, I got it for Christmas a few years ago. I also possess the Official Tales soundtrack and the Crypt Keeper Xmas album (which I still listen to every holiday season.) Thanks anyway.

It just upsets me that here in the U.S., every freakin' series (from Buffy to The Sheild) is released in DVD box sets except Tales! Somebody should petition HBO to do it!

I'm new at this message board thing, so bear with me.

This message is for brainbug:

Thanks for the info. I appreciate how you also like the idea of having Tales on DVD. I already know that 3 of the Robert Zemekis episodes are on one DVD format. Sorry if I sound picky, but there are over 90 episodes altogether in 7 seasons, and not even half of them are even on the VHS tapes. Even worse, the ones on the tapes are NOT in chronological order!
Don't get me wrong, I know Tales was an anthology series. But even each season showed a growth in budget, in direction, and even in the Keeper's wardrobe! If the episodes are put into a hat and shaken in random order, that's cheap to me.

Anyway, hope I'm not rambling on, but somebody should petition HBO or something. That would be awesome!

BleedingSky

There was an online petition going around for a few years, and even after all time, I think there were only something like 351 signatures. If an online petition can only gather that many, I don't hold much hope for an actual one. Too bad really because I loved that show. I used to have every episode on tape. Oh well, I guess that's what the internet is for! :)

If HBO was going to put "Tales" onto a few box sets, there must be a slew of extras:

Some director's commentary
A behind-the-scenes special
T.V. advertisements announcing upcoming episodes
A make-up photo gallery
Interview with John Kassir (voice of the Crypt Keeper)
Bloopers and outtakes
"The Crypt Jam" music video

WE MUST NOT LET TALES ROT AWAY ON VIDEO SHELVES, KIDDIES! IT'S TIME TO MAKE HBO TAKE THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND AND SEE THAT THIS SHOW DOESN'T GO TO WASTE!!

I've heard a rumor floating around that in early 2005 the HBO Tales from the Crypt tv show is going to show up on DVD.

However I'm at a loss to find any reliable info on the web.
This is one series I would not have a problem emptying my wallet for.
I'm just too tired nowadays to stay up till 3 am and tape them off the tv.

Great to see some more Crypt fans in here...be sure to vote for your Favourite Tales from the Crypt Episode HERE... (http://www.rue-morgue.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4463&highlight=John+Kassir)

And although I posted this in that thread, since this one is specifically on the hopeful DVD release here's a bit of info I found out...

Hey Everyone,
I have some GREAT news for those of you wanting Tales from the Crypt on DVD.
At the Festival of Fear I asked John Kassir (The Crypt Keeper himself!) about a DVD release. He said HBO recently sold the rights to Warner, and they had contacted him to do commentary or intros I guess. I'm not sure if he's done them yet, or still has to do them. But this means there IS a planned DVD release!!!
He wasn't sure if it would be one big box set, or maybe each season...either way I can't wait!!!

Of course I have not seen any OFFICIAL Word...but that means there's hope.....

Oh and be sure to check out this wicked cool Tales from the Crypt site which has a complete listing of Every episode (Thanks to Madam Melva for the link :D )

I used to have the talking Crypt Keeper doll in the tux. He's probably lying around somewhere. I used to watch it all the time when I was little. I love the movies and whenever I was up early on the weekends I'd try to watch the cartoon on TV. My dad used to read the comic when he was younger. It's too bad he didn't hold on to them.

...looks like I picked the wrong time to have my DVD player's brain burn out on me...fucking Koss players, man, stay away from them. I'm going for an affordable Panasonic early next year, and hey-hey, the Crypt Keeper is going to waltz onto my shelf to give that playah a work out. Here's hoping that it isn't akin to the Night Gallery box set, with nothing extras-wise but a cute foto of Mr. Serling on the cover...What do you all think that the extras SHOULD be? I'd go for getting the original writers and artists on the comic stories to do commentary? Is Graham Ingels still alive...or at least, available??

The Hellraiser lament config box set is extremely badass & was worth the $35 it cost from amazon.uk

I bought a bootleg set of every TFTC episode on ebay a year ago for $150, I've seen them go for $70 now... great set to tye me over until the real sets start rolling out, which I will then gladly go broke for.

Both of those are definate favorites of mine. Also I love the one about the ventriloquist whos hand is his twin. And the kid who is abused by his uncle who sells coffins & get his feet chopped off so he'll fit in a coffin.

That would be 1991's "Abra Cadaver."

and the one with Roger Daltrey and Steve Buscemi with the fast-acting leperous/liquification virus.

1993's "Forever Ambergris," which was considered by far the goriest episode.

Warner has announced the complete first season of Tales from the Crypt which will be arriving in shops from the 12th July this year. Based on the legendary and gruesome EC Comics from publisher William Gaines, this horror anthology featured stories of murder, the super natural, gore and humor and always had a twist ending of sorts. Some of Hollywood's biggest names took part, either working in front or behind the camera. Each of the episodes will be presented in 1.33:1 full frame along with English 2.0 Stereo Surround tracks. Extras will be included on this one, but Warner has yet to reveal what they will be.

It's about time! Hopefully it'll be the uncut HBO episodes, not the cut down ones.

I was thinking the same thing Zombie,
Also considering the first season only had 6 episodes it's kind of a rip off. I mean there is only 93 episodes total, why not bundle them together, or at least do 1+2 and 3+4 etc...

The show ran from 89-96....so if HBO is charging around 100 for each set it would really piss me off...could be the most expensive set I would ever buy....lets hope they drop the price a bit, and bundle the later seasons together...I really want this set, I just hope it doesn't get too expensive...

"TALES FROM THE CRYPT-1ST SEASON

Television viewers got a fright in 1989, when TALES FROM THE CRYPT made the transition from EC comicbook to TV show. Hosted by the Cryptkeeper, each episode of the show offered a new, ghoulish tale for the audience to sink their teeth (or fangs) into. The show originated on HBO, and all six episodes from the first season are included here.

It was such a success that myriad CRYPT-inspired spin-off's resulted, including an animated series, several feature films, and seemingly infinitesimal merchandising opportunities. I know Season 2 had 18 episodes, which made this longer than any of the other seasons that came afterward. Here's the official episode guide:

Tales from the Crypt: The complete First Series

In 10 Words or Less
The first six episodes of the classic horror series

THE STORY SO FAR...
Tales from the Crypt was one of the most famous comic books ever, and not just for the high-quality tales of horror and incredibly detailed artwork. The controversy over the effect these stories have on children obscured just what the comic book did, and that's effectively combine horror and comedy, almost single-handedly popularizing the "twist ending." Decades later, a talented group of producers, including Richard Donner, Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis, took those stories and created one of HBO's milestone series, the 93-episode run of "Tales from the Crypt."

THE DISC:
The first season of "Tales from the Crypt" arrives on a two-disc set, held in a three-panel digipack with an embossed slipcase. The six episodes are on the first DVD, along with a new introduction, while the special features are found on Disc Two.

In an interesting touch, the series' opening titles, complete with the memorable theme music by Danny Elfman, is used as the opening animation of the DVD, which you can skip using an appropriate "Kill Intro" on-screen option. This is the only time on this DVD you'll see the titles, as the episodes dive in without them. Also interesting is the fact that these titles are in anamorphic widescreen. I don't know if they've ever been seen in this aspect ratio before, considering the show certainly aired in 4:3 format in 1989.

THE QUALITY:
Dark cable-TV footage from the late '80s is not likely to look all that great, and this disc's full-frame video is no exception. The audio, presented in Dolby Surround 2.0.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Starting with fantastic source material like the EC horror comics set this series for greatness, while talent involved help the show fulfill that promise, as seen in this short six-episode season. Just having this series released will satisfy plenty of boys and ghouls out in DVD land, but outside of the episodes, the set is hardly what one would expect for such a beloved series, with just a scant few extras to enjoy. At least the price is right for those who just want to enjoy these episodes.

**************

As I've stated this is just an abridge version with parts selected by me, that I figured would be of some interest. Please for the complete review visit www.dvdtalk.com as I'm sure the reviewer would appriciated it since he took the time to review the discs!

Hey, it's just the first season. At least a few extras is better than none, and no doubt there will be alot more with the upcoming seasons. The second one, in fact, had 18 episodes, much more than any other season ever aired on HBO.

I guess I can't blame you for thinking that. Still, keep in mind that the first 6 episodes were meant to test the waters.

You also have to think that with six episodes that equals 3 hours. Plus you add in the extras. With all of that at under $20 is a good deal.

I picked it up today and it's not bad. I would'a liked a commentary track or somethin' on at least one of the episodes, and the documentary could'a spent a bit more time on the TV series (and movies for that matter), but those are minor gripes. Wasn't the documentary on Disc 2 reviewed by Rue Morgue a while back? It's an excellent look back on the history of E.C. comics and the controversy that eventually enveloped their horror comics for the most part. It does cover the origins of the series' HBO adaptation, but it doesn't bother to mention the films based on the comics that occurred before the HBO series. I remember the Rue Morgue review mentioning the same thing...

I'm pleased that these are finally coming to DVD, but I wish they'd have taken more care into putting together something a little more... I dunno, deluxe. The episodes don't even have chapter stops.

I would like to hear your take on it... it seemed pretty thorough on the comics angle, but it conveniently left out all the "duds" from before and after the T.V. show. And that cartoon thing.

Yeah, it's pretty much nothin' new if you're even a casual fan of comics. Still, it's not a bad watch. Just nothin' new. I really would'a liked to have heard about the makin' of Demon Knight, why they put money behind Bordello of Blood, and what happened to the third TFTC movie that was supposed to come to theaters entitled Fat Tuesday. It would'a been cool to also see a little bit about Tales From The CryptKeeper.

Maybe s'more about the TV show too, because for a documentary detailin' the leap from comics to TV, it didn't really go into much detail about anythin' besides the main principal producers/directors.
