View Full Version : am I doing the mag good by only buying off shelves?
Nonsense

or would a sub put more coin in your pockets? or is there a difference at all?
I've bought every issue off newsstands for the last 2 years or so, and I know its good to have a retail presence, but Ive been thinking of getting the ever cost-and-time-effective subscription.
For the difference of a buck here and there, I dont mind supporting the mag.
what say you?

I live in a house, and I've had magazines swiped from my mailbox. Probably by teens who distribute flyers to you're door. Hasn't happened in a while,( I complained) but, as a result, I now buy many of my publications from the stand.

I pick the rag up from my local comic shop. I know the guys who run the place, so I'd rather go in and pick up the mag instead of having it delivered cause:
1) I'm there anyways to pick up my comics
2) I get it sooner than I would through subscription
3) I'd be supporting both my local comic shop and the Rue-Morgue folk.
Everyone wins... well, except for my bank account.... :blood:

No, they're called PO (post office) boxes.
We used to call them ID (Igloo drop) boxes but we're become more americanized by the day up here.

I absolutely love Rue Morgue. I think it's the most impressive horror magazine to ever hit the newstands, however, I just can't subscribe because it's just entirely too fucking expensive. Again, I love your mag, but you really do ask an outrageous subscription price.
Velvet Kiss

??????
With the subscription, it's less than $7 an issue (and worth far more).
Lay off the Crack for one day a month, and you've got it covered!

mikey horror,
The subscription prices actually work out to be quite a bit cheaper than buying them on the newstands. With a one year paid subscription you essentially get 2 free issues with the amount you'd be saving from buying it at the local Borders, etc... with a two year, 6 issues.

I realize in the grander sceme of things, yes, it is cheaper, but the subscription price is a lot to pay all at once. Do you wind up spending more money buying it periodically, yes, but there is a clear difference in paying 7.99 an issue, monthly and dishing out the subscription price in one shot. I love the magazine, I really do, but compared to other magazines, it is really expensive.

I'm just guessing here... the Rue Crew would actually have to confirm, but this is my understanding of retail services offering magazines/newspapers (dollar amounts are for examples only):
The retail store orders 50 copies of a publication for sale. They receive a discounted price on the 50 copies. If they sell all 50, they pay only $1 per issue.
At the end of the month, they haven't sold all 50, and return 20. Having sold only 30 issues, and returned 20, their discount lowers, and they end up paying $2 for each issue they sold.
If the cover price is $5, that means that the retail outlet made $3 per issue. That's how the retail outlet turns a profit and stays in business.
Hence, if you purchase directly from RM etc. you pay the same cover price of $5, but all $5 goes directly to RM, not to the middle man.
Same goes for all magazines/newspapers etc. The Toronto Star loves that you read their paper, but they would rather you subscribe - their "subscription numbers" go up, which they use to attract more advertisers, and their profit increases, cause they don't have to discount for the retail outlet. So, to get you to subscribe, they offer you amazing deals on the cost of home delivery, vs. buying it at the store. They are still making more money off your paper than they would if you bought it at the store.
Is any of that clear?

Sure, crystal clear. Doesn't change the fact that the magazine is still expensive.

For the amount of colour along with interesting articles and an endless amount of reading pleasure, I am not certain what you expect a magazine to retail for? I am quite happy with the content and the cost of Rue Morgue. "You do get what you pay for"

Dude, I'm a broke ass college student working full time just to pay my truck note. Yet somehow I find the money. If the magazine is too much for you, here's a surprise, don't buy it. And if you think a measly $60 is expensive, I'd hate to give you a heart attack with my truck note. Or my rent. Or my insurance. Want to afford that subscription? Eat one less fast food meal a month, and you'll have enough.

For the first time in years I had to get off my ass and go to the store to get the re-print issue, because it's not covered by my subscription. I also had to pick up the latest Fango because it seems I've let my subscription for that lapse. The Rue Morgue cost me $7.99. The fucking Fangoria was $11.99!!! That's a fifty percent difference. A full one third more for the Fango. If anything, I'd say Mr. Gudino is under-pricing himself in the market (obviously a business decision Marco isn't in charge of).
So, take into account that its nearest competitor is significantly more per issue, the quality of the paper stock that RM is printed on and the fact that the Canadian dollar has risen roughly 20% over the last two yearsagainst the USD and the impact that would have on a Canadian magazine that sells (I'm guessing) 90% of its copies in the United States and I'd say $7.99 is beyond reasonable.
As for subscribing, as long as you can scrape together the pittance a magazine subscription costs (hint, hint mikey horror), it's always the best option. You pay less and the magazine you like makes more. And then your copies of HUSTLER, BARELY LEGAL and RUE MORGUE arrive in your mailblox before they show up on newstands and everybody is happy.

I always bought Rue Morgue off the magazine rack of a local Hastings. Then all of sudden it wouldn't be there until well after each issue's release. When the issues DID show up, they were torn up and dog-eared. I'm guessing one of their employees takes it in the back and reads it when it gets in and puts it back on the stand after he or she's done using it as a bludgeon or something.
So I'm subscribing.

not being a smart ass here but do friends and family buy you birthday or Christmas gifts? Might be a good idea to let the hints fly...
Thats what I did, and I ended up getting a subscription as a Christmas gift...it's the gift of Horror all year long...how can you argue with that!

well, I am a loyal reader of fangoria...and i find it a bit sad that burzum isnt far from direct fact with the blade coverage...
i cant even friggin find the rue morgue rag on stands, so i just listen to the radio and im waiting to spring the idea of the subscription on my family as a birthday gift (september!!), i love seeing the looks on my parents faces when a magazine shows up and they look at the cover and its like "O.o..oh, this must be Josh's...*throws*" but from what im hearing...rue morgue could totally kick fangoria's ass in a cake making contest...
