I'm into some of this shit. Brainoil, Iron Monkey, Older Facedowninshit, Catheter (they grind too) oh and Sleep too.
Anybody else?
Iron Monkey hands down is some of the evilest shit I've ever heard on CD.

I love Kylesa. But don't really see them as sludge. Maybe? I dunno.
High on Fire is ok but They are Ex- Sleep.
Facedowninshit kills. The new one is ok too but it's kinda more hXc/crust than sludge.
I forgot about Kyuss. Blues for the Red Sun is wicked.
Burning Witch and SUNN0 have eluded me anyone have any info?
Oh yeah.....
Neurosis, Isis and Red Sparowes.

I saw EyeHateGod and Neurosis in Detroit, in 98, and that was as sick as it's gonna get.
Mike Williams the singer for EHG asked me where to find rohypnol (roofies), and I asked him if he was looking to get lucky, and all he said was 'No, they're for me'.
As for sludge, etc I suggest the following:
Grief
Buzzoven - Sore
Sons Of Otis (Fantastic toronto band)
Dystopia
Graves At Sea
Pelican
If any of you were lucky to catch Neurosis
during the Souls At Zero, Enemy Of The Sun, Through Silver In Blood tours, you'll know how much those guys lay waste, and stomp as mudhole through your guts. These records still do a mean creepy crawl on my brain.

Funny, I never really considered Neurosis and Isis to be stoner metal bands, but I guess if you like one thing you can probably get into the other easily enough. You add Cult of Luna onto that list if you like Neurosis and Isis...
Although I haven't gotten too into them, I've heard a few Fu Manchu tracks that I've liked. They're a fairly prolific stoner metal band..
As for Doom metal, you can't go wrong with Paradise Lost, Candlemass, and My Dying Bride...

As for grind, which is far from stoner metal, I haven't heard anything better than Napalm Death's Fear, Emptiness, Despair. An absolute masterpiece of intensity.

Thanks, Obed, my kind of thread!!! (Hey, I'm a poet!) I started checking out stoner rock back at the turn of 2000, when Rolling Stone featured a short article on it and had a sidebar with some groups--I went out and bought Queens of the Stone Age (1st), Orange Goblin/The Big Black, sHeavy/Celestial Hi-Fi, Fu Manchu/King of the Road, Nebula/To The Center--I prefer my metal to have some kind of groove, so I'm not so much into the sludge aspect (or the "Cookie Monster" vocals), altho I can appreciate some Melvins, Electric Wizard, etc.--I have been hooked since--I HIGHly recommend newer acts, like Viking Skull and Young Heart Attack--to check out mucho songs in the genre and order great stuff from a reliable place, go to--what else?--www.stonerrock.com--I go there on an almost weekly basis to check out the latest sounds!

Just picked up Church of Misery's latest, Houses of the Unholy. For those unfamiliar with the band, musically they're like a heavier version of their countrymates Boris: all fuzzed-out, wah-wahed rock action without any of the dreamy, drifty, drony stuff. Lyrically though they're somewhat gimmicky, in that every song they write is about a different serial killer. That may seem like it's in dubious taste, but the singing is mostly unintelligible, so it's not really a problem. They also do one cover song per album: this time out, said cover is a ripping version of Sir Lord Baltimore's "Master Heartache."
Also, the design of the CD booklet makes this worth buying a physical copy instead of a digital one. Each song / serial killer pairing gets its own page in the booklet, which is designed to look like a series of covers to old Blue Note LPs. Very cool.
In sum, if you're in to stuff like Boris, Corrupted, Eyehategod, Weedeater, Bongzilla, etc., you should probably check this out.

I've heard of them, and I've also heard that the vocals can be a dealbreaker. I'll check out the linked song when I get home later today.

Listened to and liked a few tracks by Jex Thoth: "Equinox Suite A) The Passion Pit" and "The Banishment." The singer's voice isn't the only thing that reminds me of Jefferson Airplane, the use of organ also contributing to the psychedelic vibe. White rabbit, black sabbath?:)
Jex Thoth also kind of remind me of the band Blood Ceremony, recently profiled in an issue of Rue Morgue.
Good stuff. Thanks (as always) for the recommendation, Fred. Also, you should rob a bank or something so that you can afford to drive across the country to the Scion fest.

And driving across the country for a festival probably isn't gonna happen since I can't even seem to get to a show 30 miles away (I suck). The Sword is scheduled to play here Thursday night but there's a huge-ass ice/snow storm headin' this direction so it'll most likely get canceled.

Apparently Dave "Dixie" Collins (Weedeater, Bongzilla) blew off a toe while cleaning his shotgun, thus postponing some of Weedeater's touring and recording plans: http://www.stonerrock.com/news/news.asp?NewsID=8289 Although the article doesn't say as much, given Dixie Dave's lyrical preoccupations, I'd think it would be a safe bet that he was stoned at the time. Maybe there's a lesson to be learned there, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is. If I were more clever, I'd make a joke about Weedeater's cover of Skynard's "Give Me Back My Bullets."
In other Dixie Dave-related news, I've been listening to and liking Violence from the Vault, the recently released 5-song archival collection from his former band Buzzov-en. While the recordings on Violence are from 1995, and thus predate Dixie Dave's stint with the band, they should appeal to anyone who likes Weedeater and stuff of that ilk.

I got to see them a couple of summers ago at Terrastock in Louisville: they played in the mid-afternoon on the outside stage, and my wife and I sat on a hill while they played, baking in the sun, drinking beer, and blissing out. I'd never heard them before, and I was instantly smitten. One of my favorite moments of that summer, and, along with Kawabata Makoto, Bardo Pond, and Pelt, one of my favorite performances from what was hands-down the best music festival I've ever attended.
So far, I've only bought their Dos record, but I've heard the debut, which is available in its entirety over at lastfm (or at least used to be). Do you listen to a lot of this psych /krautrocky kind of stuff?

Nope.
A friend told me about them about a year or so ago and I figured it might be the type of stuff you would like. Guess I was right!

This track sounds too much like The Doors.
Edit: They do a pretty mean Velvet Underground (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJMFTVenGJk&feature=related) as well.

Hey, I'm getting old.
Yeah, they're very Doors, but in a good way--i.e., more "The End" than "Love Me Two Times."

Just found this band, Rituals of the Oak (http://www.myspace.com/ritualsoftheoak), that plays traditional doom metal and features a female lead singer. Good stuff!

I really like this band as well. Their stuff on Man's Ruin was some of the first stoner/sludge stuff I heard, and it really clicked for me. Fun fact: frontwoman Lori S. is Melvins drummer Dale Crover's ex-wife, and drummer Joey Osbourne also played (and maybe still plays, though I'm not sure) in Crover's Altamont.

Acid King kicks ass. I've always been a fan of the Melvins even before I heard the term 'stoner metal'. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned Sleep but there a definite must for any stoner metal fan. a friend of mine just turned me onto Witchcraft which are more Doorsey sounding. A few others I like
Electric Wizard
Kyuss

No love for Torche?
Otherwise, I'll just reiterate that Neurosis, Kylesa, and Pelican are badass.

I like that their vocalist doesn't sound like he's trying to be Ozzy but isn't as damned harsh as the frontman for Church of Misery, either.

I like Eyehategod and Crowbar quite a bit, of course Clutch and Scissorfight too.
I know clutch and Scissorfight aren't metal but I thought I'd throw them in there.
Oh and Soilent Green.

I think Dopethrone is probably my favorite of theirs, but I really like Witchcult Today too. "Dunwich" is one of the cooler explicitly Lovecraft-inspired metal songs.

I'm hoping they didn't go COMPLETELY seventies retro in the production like they did with Witchcult Today. It just doesn't seem to have any real... I dunno, oomph to it. It's almost like listening to a recording of a recording.

Witchfinder General's "Death Penalty" record has been spinning endlessly in my apartment ever since I picked it up last month.
For me, nothing beats Sabbath when it comes to doom metal. Sleep, Acid King, Witch and Kyuss come close.
