Bah! Metallica are great, but Appetite for Destruction is the single greatest rock album ever released...
:banger:
Yes, but in the 80's Metallica released 3 masterpieces (And Justice for All aint too shabby either if you ask me) while G'NR only had 1. ;)

Well, seeing as how G n R only released one full length album in the 90's, it's kind of hard for them to have had more than one masterpiece.. They picked up their second and third in 91...

Unfortunately both "Use Your Illusion" albums contained mostly filler songs which could of easily been omitted to make one killer album. It's too bad they chose to include so much weak material on both releases.

GNR was great for a little while, but they can't compare with the success and longevity of Metallica. Axl is a major douche.

Hmm.. After spending 9 hours in the car this weekend, listening to G n R for a surprisingly large portion of that, I disagree somewhat.. I think UYI 1 is a fantastic concept album, with 95% killer songs.. Couple weak ones, but Don't Cry, NOvember Rain, Coma, Dead Horse, Don't Damn Me, Right Next Door to Hell, etc. are killer songs..
UYI II is filler that didn't fit the concept of UYI I, despite such great songs as Civil War and You Could Be Mine. So we split the difference, two masterpieces..
Now if Axl would just get off his ass and get Chinese Democracy out.. I've really liked the few songs I've heard off it..

OK guys and gals, while on the subject of 80's metal, let's address the ballad. While most will not admit to liking this sappy shit, I'm sure many of you out there still enjoy the tear jerking love songs put forth by such bands as Aerosmith, KISS and Bon Jovi. My personal fave: Tesla-What you give. Anyone else have a personnel favorite?

and believe it or not..King Diamond
I believe it...I would have thought on a horror board that King would get more love. ;) "Abigail" and "Them" are both great albums, and would make fantastic horror films imo.
I think King Diamond is one of those things you either love love love or hate hate hate. Some people can't get beyond his operatic screech-and-growl singing, and some can't get into the horror-story-concept-album format. But if you can get into those things, then nobody does quite what King does.
If you're looking for some good horror metal, Abigail and Them are the best. "Conspiracy" is a sequel to "Them," and is pretty good too. I liked "The Eye" as well. However, he hasn't done anything nearly that good since then, imo. Still, I'm glad he did those.

The 80s was a fabulous time to grow up, I mean we had awesome cartoons like Dungeons and Dragons, Pee Wee and Muppet Babies and the 80s metal was of course amazing. I grew up in a "banger" area. Motley Crue was a must, I admit I thought I was hot stuff with my long sleeve black n' grey Motley Crue Shout at the Devil shirt which I would wear with my black tight jeans, damn I wish I still had that shirt.
So Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Guns n' Roses, DRI, Venom....etc...
I still have my square 80s metal pins, one of Nikki Sixx (so hot), Motley Crue ones, and some Judas Priest.

Anyone who says they dont like Judas Priest should be dragged behind a porn theater and sodomized by Rob Halford. Living after Midnight, Breaking the Law, and You've Got Another Thing Coming, are forever burned into my brain as some of metals greatest anthems.

Iron Maiden!!!! No question. Anything from Killers, Number of the Beast, Peace of Mind rocked.
Also I'm gonna say Ozzy. I still listen to Ozzy. He is still a metal god. Diary of a Madman, Blizzard of Oz, Bark at the moon.
Slayer is damn good as well. They have an incredible sound and Kerry King just kicks ass. South of Heaven is a hardcore, ass kicking album. Killer guitar work and heavy vocals. One of the best albums by Slayer in my opinion. Followed by Reign in Blood and Seasons in the Abyss.
Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil and Too Fast for Love also gets my vote. The Crue just kicked ass back in the day.

A few of my favorites, off the top of my head and in no particular order:
- JUDAS PRIEST (Perhaps the greatest of all time? Welcome back, Rob n' Co.! Woohoooo!!!)
- L.A GUNS (God, I love this band -- when they're off they ain't so hot at all, but when they're on they're one of my favorites of all time)
- KISS (yeah, I even love the sans make-up years -- fits the topic)
- OZZY OSBOURNE (what has happened to this guy who used to scare the living *hell* out of parents?)
- GUNS N' ROSES (though I can really only say I *love* Appetite For Destruction -- one of the Top 5 Greatest Hard Rock Albums Ever Recorded, IMO)
- VAIN
- TORA TORA
- RATT (most of their stuff -- Stephen Pearcy's voice, IMO, was the sleaziest in rock history, which always bumped them up a notch for me even on the songs I thought were just "so-so")
- TESLA (unfairly lumped in with the whole "hair band" thing, IMO -- Tesla were just a good blue-collar rock n' roll band)
- CINDERELLA (ditto the Tesla comment above -- sure, their hair was taller than my friggin' house, but they were a great blues-based hard rock band)
- METALLICA (yeah . . . once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away . . . they turn my stomach now, though, just hearing Hetfield's voice; I can barely even listen to the old stuff I once loved)
- ANTHRAX (though I think the John Bush stuff blows away everything they ever did with Joey Belladonna, I grew up listening to these guys, so albums like Among the Living, State of Euphoria, I'm the Man will always hold a special place in my heart)
- MEGADETH
- BLACK SABBATH (no, of course it's not the real Sabbath by any means, but I even like quite a bit of their work with Tony Martin)
- ACCEPT (balls to the wall, mofo)
Showin' my age (and possibly my extreme uncoolness?) and not at all ashamed of it,
J.N.

Great show. I loved how they pulled out all the classics. One problem though; Priest after Slayer? Halford and the boys sounded as heavy as Sharon Lois and Bram. Slayer in the rain...so romantic.
My metal list:
Metallica
Megadeth
Metal Church
Motorhead
(lot of "M" bands)
Voivod
DRI
Maiden
Priest
Slayer
and the grandaddy of them all;
OZZY fuckin OSBOURNE
I've always been more of a punk, but I really dug the heavy shit back then.

Some of the bands mentioned are ones that I actually already like quite a bit. Mercyful Fate/King Diamond is something that I have been meaning to get into beacause the stuff I heard from them, I really dug.
I am more into the undergound/thrash stuff than the glam stuff.
Razor is another band that I would like to get to know better as well.

Melissa is such a great record, I have the 2 x CD with that album and The Beginning (which has the amazing debut EP Nuns Have No Fun on it) but Roadrunner released a 25th anniversary edition with what looks like a bonus DVD and a really nice slipcase and great packaging.... I know I have a ton of other stuff to buy but I really feel like picking that version up for the live footage.
Don't Break The Oath is great too, but in my opinion nothing can touch the first EP and Melissa and it's all downhill afterwords........

Fermentor has quite an awesome list but I refuse to accept a Venom reference without at least some kudos given to At War With Satan.....

I never really considered The Misfits a metal band. It's weird seeing so many people mention Suicidal as a metal band when their first two albums were total hardcore. Okay, Join the Army was more crossover, I'll give ya that.

For those of you who miss the 80's, and are intersted in a real live "Hit Me Baby, One More Time" event... This summer London has Rock in the Park happening.
I'm on the fence about this one, but here's the lineup:
EDDIE MONEY
LOVERBOY
SAGA
KIM MITCHELL
APRIL WINE
ALICE COOPER
QUIET RIOT
HELIX
and I hear they're after Cinderella and Whitesnake as well. If they get Poison or Def Leppard, I just may go. $70, 3 days... beer tents.
