I know this isn't the appropriate place to be asking this but I thought that, since Rue Morgue is published in TO, you could help me with this.

There was an old CITY TV show back in the 80's that used to play early in the morning. It was just a camera moving through downtown TO (it must have been late since you never saw anyone on the streets) and was accompanied by soft jazz music in the background.

For YEARS this show has been haunting me. I don't know why but I have strong memories of watching it at 2 or 3 in the morning, when my insomnia was keeping me up, back in the late 80's when I was about 10.

I think the show was called Night Moves. Does ANYONE remember this?

It was Night Moves. I used to use it as a lullaby. I've mentioned this show to dozens of people and no one ever seems to know what I'm talking about.

I get that reaction whenever I talk about Silk Stalkings or Misfits of Science...

...m...you guys DO remember those...doncha?

I remember Night Moves, mostly because I never got the point of Night Moves. In the days before I had a VCR in my room, and only got about 15 channels, I hated Night Moves. You couldn't put anything better on late at night?

And Misfits of Science rocked!

Nobody ever seems to know what I'm talking about when I bring up Whitney and the Robot. Anyone see that one? I can hardly remember myself I was so young.

Night Moves! I remember watching it on Christmas Eve when I was young (because I couldn't sleep, of course). They would play Christmas songs and show decorated houses. Fun times.

Silk Stalkings

Urgh. I remember that thing, it played in terminal syndication on USA after it had been unceremoniously dumped by some network or other.

Misfits of Science

Was this the HBO show that was built from the Tales from the Crypt formula, but was based around the EC sci-fi titles (Wierd Science, Weird Fantasy) instead? Or was that called PERVERSIONS of Science?

AMAZING that others recall this simple, effective mood piece. I'd ALWAYS catch this as a pre teen after an all night horror movie binge. Like Melo said, it was a lullaby. Very relaxing and interesting...

As I recall, there were variations on it.
Night Moves and then I THINK Night Walk or something which was camera POV in TO walking the night streets while smooth jazz played.

Kind of eerie too...not sure why.

Because people like us always put it in the perspective of Frank Zito.

You got it man. The sheer lonliness of the show is very much akin to the Zito/Bickel Hell-o-verse. But it's also something else - an aura of disembodiment - the disconnect of it. Sort of like death.

You are correct, sir. But as any diehard fan of the series knows, Night Walk was infinitely superior to Night Moves! Any old Shmoe could take a camera out on the streets at night but it required PERMITS to get inside those buildings in the financial district after hours.

Long live NIGHT WALK! (And I heard rumours that the original cast were thinking of getting together for a short lived reunion series entitled Night Drive! Wouldn't that be a dream?)

I want a 2 disc special edition DVD. MondoMacabro...are you getting this?

I'd take these shows over infomercials anyday.

EDIT: FEEDBACK, that pic of the escalator really brought be back. lol.

Can we interpret that to mean that the 'infinitely superior' Night Walk was shot by janitors perhaps?

I remember Night Moves too - never understood it either - heavy sax-driven jazz beats coupled with that near hypnotic slow moving camera that used to lull me into mind-numbing apathy.

That escalator shot is very cool btw.

Misfits of Science went for about 6 episodes and was a paranormal research centre that help kids with the 'powers', it was a cross between x-men and the Tomorrow People...kind of like DP7!

The feeling's I remember from this show stem from living in Hamilton. Toronto was a mythic metropolis and I looked at it as the Canadian equivilant of New York so there was allways some mystique about the city and to see it soo desolated was very surreal. I look on it today as a mood piece back when people were able to put just about anything on T.V. back then. I'd love to get ahold of the show or for CITY TV to show it again or maybe even relaunch it.

I actually do remember NIGHT WALK and remember that I found it strange that they changed the title of the show. It was to Night Moves what Star Trek The Next Generation was to Star Trek. I think NIGHT DRIVE would be an great idea as long as they didn't make it a prequel.....

Talk about a blast from the past!

I remember Night Moves... it was a great way to drift off to sleep late at night... I was living in London at the time, and planning to move to Toronto as soon as I could. Night Moves was inspirational to me.

That's right, er, BEYOTCH, you smack that motherfucker down!!!:boozer:

P.S. Schizoid, I have a personal beef with you. I Love Night of the Comet and was desperate to see Sole Survivor. I was thinking about buying a copy off of E-bay but I managed to find one at the video store down the street and THANK FUCK I did because that movie sucked 12 shades of shit out of Hitler's asshole. Christ was a fucking awfull film. The worst part was the end. Wouldn't it have made more sense for the Chloe Sevingy lookalike to have been the one to rise up behind the doctor at the end. At least THAT would have been a nice little jolt. But this movie failed on almost every fucking level except for those nice boobies that baby factory had earlier in the film.

Yeah, I guess I was mistaken because I used to watch Late Great Movies on CITY TV and probably channel surfed untill I found the show. It's strange but I could have sworn that it was on C-TV. My bad.

Night Walk(Night Ride, Night Music, Night Moves)

An unusual show - and an ingeniously inexpensive piece of programming - that featured a night-time walk through Toronto streets with the camera providing the point-of-view. This show had a mesmeric quality about it, and was probably most viewed by insomniacs trying to get back to sleep. Only one walk was featured and was repeated incessantly during early morning broadcast hours on Global. Later, other programs were added in the same vein – Night Ride, showing a car ride through the streets of Toronto, as well as Night Music and Night Moves, depicting a variety of street scenes, with music.

Broadcast: 1986-1993

Time slot: early mornings, usually between 3:00 and 5:00 am

Running time: 60 – 120 minutes

Man, I totally remember this show now too. City TV still has a little tiny bit of this kind of thing when they do their 'City TV...everywhere...' bits, where they're just filming some random intersection in Toronto...I don't remember if it was CityTV or Global, but it was on early when I was a tike.

This was part of my everyday morning routine as a kid, and had COMPLETELY forgotten about it until I read this post - I seriously watched it when I was REALLY young (I probably watched the last half hour at 4:30-5:00 - was a weird kid and liked to get up retardedly early)...this would be followed by some underwater explorer show, Hercules and eventually the hilarious house of frightenstein and whatever shows would come on like Inspector Gadget...Damn! Thank you for bringing this back in my memory!

Not to sidetrack this thread, but another crazy chaotic show that I remember as a kid (that was on in the evenings) was Dr. Snuggles...I remember it was on before Dr. Who (as that show's theme would send my younger brother running out of the room!)...also Barbapapa, that was very odd too. I'm sure we could all name shows and play 'That's Familiar' all day, so I'll leave it at that...

Goddamn - I'd plum forgotten about Night Ride and Night Walk. I seem to remember the credits actually featured the names of some serious jazz notables like Guido Basso. As far as I recall it was largely instrumental, except for Oh Yes There Will Be Love with some female singer.
Funny how you can totally forget about something so trivial but when someone else brings it up a million memories come flooding back.
Now I have that fucking song stuck in my head. Thanks a lot.

Yup - I was living in Kingston at the time, and City wasn't available locally back then.
And yes, Feedback, Chris is a total fucking chone among chones. At least I think he is. Er... Okay, what's a chone?

Okay, so while we're on the subject, who remembers the mighty, mighty...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!SANTO GOLD!!!!!!!!

What a totally bizarre-ass late night experience that was. And it only ever seemed to be on on nights when my girlfriend was asleep and I was still up. The next night we'd both be up and there I am clicking through channels like a silly asshole to show her, and no dice. Kinda like that old Warner Bros. cartoon with the singing frog.

It's weird, some of my favorite memories are of staying up to watch whatever Late Night City TV movie was on (usually a horror movie) followed by Movie Macabre with Elvira and then Night Walk for a few hours untill Hillariou House of Frightenstien and then Inspector Gadget untill I passed out.

I don't know what it was but back then people actually tried to put on programming that appealed to horror fans. I miss the days when you could catch Monsters, Tales from the Darkside or Freddy's Nightmares on or after 11 or 12.

I really wish that someone would FINALLY create a real horror channel. I just can't fucking believe in this day and age that there is a 24 hour channel for virtually every type of fucking thing on the planet except for Horror. Fuck sakes man, is there no one with the brains to realise what a goldmine a 24 hour horror station would be?!?!

Sorry if I'm off topic but I just heard that The Horror Channel has caved in and won't be happening.

Mother.......FUCKER!!!
